The mill processed 40 tons of ore per month. A telephone line was connected to the mine, and a six-mile long railroad was built from the mine to the foot of San Juan Mountain.
The area was also home to the last Mexican governor of California, Pio Pico. He obtained the land by a grant from the Mexican government in 1841. The nearby Las Flores jail is the only building in the area that is completely intact. This jail is visible 9.8 miles from pavement. A cemetery is located a short walk west of the jail. The surrounding homeowners put up signs to make access look illegal. It is possible that the gate next to an expensive vacation home rental will be unlocked soon.
A lot of the Las Flores real estate was built between the years 1970 and 1999, and most of the homes are owner occupied. The neighborhood’s vacancy rate is only 1.7%, compared to 89.3% of the national average. This indicates that the community has recovered much more quickly during the economic downturn.
